Top Things to Do Around Byron Bay
Coastal walks, lighthouse views, hinterland waterfalls and Julian Rocks snorkelling — our pick of the best things to do around Byron Bay.

Byron Bay's beaches get most of the attention, but the area packs an extraordinary amount into a small footprint — marine sanctuaries, rainforest waterfalls, world-class wellness studios, weekly markets, and some of the best whale watching in the country. Here's how we'd spend a week if we were visiting.
Walk the Cape Byron Track. The 3.7km loop from the Captain Cook Lookout around the lighthouse is the area's signature walk and the best way to orient yourself on day one. Allow 90 minutes to two hours, wear proper shoes (there are real stairs and steep sections), and pack water. The lookout points along the eastern side are where you'll spot dolphins almost daily and humpback whales from June to November.
Snorkel or dive at Julian Rocks. Ten minutes by boat from The Pass, Julian Rocks Marine Reserve is one of the top dive sites in Australia. The reserve protects more than 1,000 marine species, and depending on the season you'll share the water with green sea turtles, leopard sharks (summer), grey nurse sharks (winter), manta rays, and enormous schools of bream and trevally. Several local operators run small-group snorkelling trips suitable for confident swimmers, and discover-scuba sessions for first-timers.
Drive into the hinterland. Twenty minutes inland, the landscape shifts to ancient rainforest, dairy country, and craft villages. Minyon Falls in Nightcap National Park is a 100-metre waterfall with a viewing platform at the top and a steep four-hour return hike to the base for the energetic. On the way back, stop in Bangalow for lunch and bookshops, or push on to Newrybar for a coffee at Harvest. The Crystal Castle outside Mullumbimby is a polarising but undeniably Byron experience — giant amethyst caves, a labyrinth, and the largest Buddha statue in the western world.
Time your visit around a market. Locals plan their weekends around the markets. The Byron Bay Farmers Market (Thursdays, 7–11am at Butler Street Reserve) is where the town's chefs shop and the best place to taste regional produce. The Byron Community Market (first Sunday of each month at Butler Street) is bigger, with handmade goods, food trucks, and live music. If you're staying longer, the Bangalow Market (fourth Sunday) and Mullumbimby Market (third Saturday) are both worth the short drive.
Book a sunrise yoga or pilates class. Byron Bay was one of the first towns in Australia to take yoga seriously, and the standard here is exceptional. Creature Yoga, Byron Yoga Centre, and Inspire Pilates all run drop-in classes for visitors. Even if you're not a regular practitioner, a single mindful hour at the start of a holiday changes the pace of everything that follows.
Take a sea kayak tour. Outfitters launch from Clarkes Beach most mornings and paddle out into the bay where dolphins, turtles, and (in season) humpback whales are routinely encountered. Trips are around three hours, suitable for beginners, and include a beach landing for a snack and a swim.
Watch whales from the headland. From late May to early November, southern humpbacks migrate past Cape Byron on their way to and from the warm calving grounds further north. The viewing platforms along the Cape Byron walk are some of the best free whale-watching spots on the east coast — pack binoculars and you'll almost certainly see breaches, tail slaps, and pec waves close to shore.
Eat your way through the town centre. Byron's food scene punches far above the size of the town. Start with coffee at Bayleaf or Folk, snack from the bakery at Top Shop, share oysters at The Balcony Bar, and finish with dinner at 100 Mile Table or Light Years. Most of the best places book out a week or more ahead in summer — plan dinners early.
Treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Byron has a long history with bodywork and the local spas reflect it. Buddha Gardens Day Spa in the hinterland is the local favourite for a full-day reset; Eve Studios in town runs excellent massage and facial treatments by appointment.
Whether you build your stay around adventure, wellness, food, or simply doing nothing on a beach, Byron Bay has a rare ability to deliver all of it in a few square kilometres. Our advice — pick three things from this list, leave space for the rest of the days to unfold, and you'll have a holiday worth coming back for.
